Hispanic Association for Higher Education of New Jersey

Welcome! The Hispanic Association for Higher Education of New Jersey, Inc. (HAHENJ) is a non-profit, volunteer driven organization whose mission is to represent and advocate for the educational and professional advancement of the Hispanic community in higher education in the state of New Jersey.  Since 1979, HAHENJ has been instrumental in providing information regarding national and statewide issues affecting Hispanics in higher education to its constituency and the community at-large.  HAHENJ's intent is to remain a viable and effective force impacting the educational policies, which impinge on the educational advancement of the Hispanic community.

The function of the Association is to promote interest and create opportunity in higher education; serve as a liaison between the Hispanic community, institutions of higher education, and governmental entities; monitor and evaluate educational legislation, policies, and regulations of federal, state, and local authorities; and establish partnerships with institutions and organizations that serve our constituency.

STRUCTURE

The governing body of HAHENJ is the Coordinating Council, which is inclusive of the Executive Board that constitutes the official voice of the Association.  The Coordinating Council consists of 13 members.  The positions represented on the council include the Executive Board plus seven Sector Representatives, Membership and Conference Chairs.  The function of the Coordinating Council is to develop and implement a work-plan to carry out the mission of the Association; organize committees and task forces as needed to assist the Association in carrying out its mission; and identify, assess and respond to current issues pertaining to Hispanics in higher education.

Within the Association, the higher education community is sub-divided into sectors for the purpose of equitable representation.  The purpose of the sectors is to implement the agenda of the Association as developed by the Coordinating Council.  Sectors serve as the vehicle for membership to communicate with the Coordinating Council.  The sectors are as follow: (a) Sector I: Research Institutions, (b) Sector II: State Colleges and Universities, (c) Sector III: Independent Four-Year Colleges and Universities, (d) Sector IV: Two-Year Colleges, (e) Sector V: Student Involvement, (f) Sector VI: Special Interest Groups, and (g) Sector VII: Faculty.
